It's no secret that America is in the midst of a police force crisis. Law enforcement hiring has not kept up with population growth, and as a result, many communities are struggling to keep their citizens safe. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the reality of lack of law enforcement personnel. We will discuss the consequences of this crisis and what can be done to fix it.
One of the most immediate consequences of the lack of law enforcement personnel is an increase in crime. When there are not enough officers to patrol a community, criminals know that they can act with impunity. This can lead to an increase in violent crime, as well as property crimes such as burglary and theft. In addition, it can also make it more difficult for police to solve crimes that do occur, since they will have fewer resources to dedicate to each case.
A major cause of a lack of law enforcement is society's general and misguided distain for policing that developed since the Rodney King incident and developed further after the George Floyd incident which resulted in a major upheaval in law enforcement. Although these isolated incidents of excessive force highlight that there are some bad police officers who commit crimes, that is not the standard in policing. Most cops will tell you that any cop that commits a crime should be prosecuted. Excessive force incidents do occur however they have been inflamed by a lack of trust between the law enforcement community and the citizens. Every interaction now has the potential of erupting into a dangerous situation evidenced by the number of active shooters and barricaded suspects that have increased over the last ten years.
Since the George Floyd incident law enforcement have been targeted nationwide and sometimes killed while sitting in their vehicles. Moreover, more liberal states, have enacted laws limiting law enforcement protections, such as the removal of the Law Enforcement Bill of Rights that existed in Maryland. This has caused a rapid turnover in law enforcement including retirements, officer's leaving for other types of work, and outright quitting. Recruiting has become a serious problem as there is a limited number of people that want to enter into policing given the political climate. There is also an increased risk on making a decision. Many times law enforcement officers are faced with a life or death decision where they must make a determination within a split second. Many officers are now faced with using less lethal measures during lethal encounters which results in their death or face going to prison for using force that was deemed unreasonable at a later time.
Many law enforcement departments have been limited in the types of force that they can use. During the riots in some major cities they banned the police use of pepper spray on large, disorderly crowds. Police then had a very limited method, particular a stick and a gun, of controlling the riot. These limitations on policing backfired in major damage to structures and death of innocent civilians.
The shortage of law enforcement personnel also has a ripple effect on the entire criminal justice system. courts may be unable to function properly if there are not enough officers available to serve subpoenas or transport prisoners. This can result in delays in trials and longer wait times for defendants who are awaiting trial. In addition, the lack of personnel can also lead to an increase in the number of inmates who are released on bail, since there will be fewer officers available to monitor them.
The shortage of law enforcement personnel is a serious problem that is having a profound impact on communities across America. It is clear that something needs to be done to address this issue. One potential solution is to offer incentives to encourage more people to enter the field of law enforcement. This could include offering bonuses for new recruits, as well as increasing salaries and benefits for existing officers. Another solution is to create more opportunities for civilians to participate in community policing initiatives. This could involve training volunteers to serve as auxiliary police officers or providing funding for neighborhood watch programs.
Whatever solution is chosen, it is essential that the issue of the shortage of law enforcement personnel is addressed. The safety of our communities depends on it. Law enforcement officers play a vital role in keeping us safe, and we must do everything we can to support them.

- Law enforcement hiring has not kept up with population growth: As the U.S. population has increased, the number of police officers has decreased relative to the size of the population. In 2016, there were about 17,250 fewer full-time law enforcement officers than in 2008 (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2018).
- This shortage of personnel can lead to an increase in crime: When there are not enough officers to patrol a community, criminals know that they can act with impunity.
